Wayfind signs for the ADA amendment

What is ADA?

ADA defines a person that has a disability as a person who has a physical or mental impairment. This substantially limits one or more major life activity. This would include people who have a record of such an impairment, even if they don’t currently have a disability.

ADA’s role when it comes to signage

ADA regulates the signage that companies (with more than 10 employees) must adhere to. Signage is meant to give people with disabilities equal and informed access to common, public areas. This includes access to buildings, bathrooms and street areas that they might want to enter.

Type of Styles for the wayfinder signs

ADA compliant signs must use a sans serif type style. These type styles are meant to offer a unified system where people with disabilities can rely on. Characters in compliant signage should not be italic, oblique, script, highly decorative, or of other unusual forms.

Character height and fonts

Characters must be selected from fonts where the width of the uppercase letter “O” is 55% minimum. It can also be 110% maximum of the height of the uppercase letter “I”. Additionally, character height measured vertically from the baseline of the character shall be 5/8-inch (16 mm) minimum. And it should be 2 inches (51 mm) maximum based on the height of the uppercase letter “I”

Why should wayfind signs meet these requirements?

It is important to meet these requirements because that is how proper with a disability will know where to go. Not only that but they might get confused based on the fonts or height that you decide to go with. This will also need to meet the ADA amendment.

What should the mounting height be?

The mounting height of the wayfinder signs should meet the ADA requirements. The visual characters for the wayfind must be 40 inches minimum above the finish floor or ground. For exit signs that is required to utilize both tactile and visual signage. The specific laws required by the ADA are detailed in section 216 Signs of the ADA Standards.

Why is this important to know about?

This is important because we want your customers to always feel part of society. Not only that but they should also know where they are going with these special wayfinder signs. They can also know if they have arrived at the destination that they were looking for. This would be very useful when it comes to a big building that requires a lot of turns. With this there will be less confusion about where they are going or need to be.

What are wayfinder signs made out of?

There are many materials that can help create the wayfinder that you want for your business. These materials consist of aluminum, acrylic, wood, plastics, or glass. You will have the choice to choose for the one that will fit with your business and its building. We want your business to be presented in a professional way.
