What are neon signs?
Neon signs are are electric signs that are lighted by long luminous gas-discharge tubes. The gas-discharge tubes have rarefied neon or other gases. These are the most used signage’s when it comes to businesses. Neon signs were named for neon, a noble gas which gives off a popular orange light, but other gases and chemicals are used to produce other colors, such as hydrogen (red), helium (yellow), carbon dioxide (white), and mercury (blue).
How do neon signs work?
Neon signs work when an electrical current is applied to a neon light tube the atoms belonging to the gas are knocked out of their orbit. The free electrons collide with each other and are sent back to the atoms. As the free electrons are absorbed by the atoms they produce energy. This energy produces the light.
What are neon signs made out of?
When making a neon sign the most common material that is used is lead glass. The lead glass is then heated with different burners. These burners are chosen depending on the number of glasses to be heated for each mixture. The burners that are used to heat the lead glass have ribbon, cannon or crossfires and also a number of torches that work on a basic mixture of butane, propane or natural gas and air. An electrode is melted to each tip of the tube when it is done. The electrodes are made of lead glass which has a little metal shell with two wires covering through the glass in which the wires of the sign will be connected. All the tubes should be put together without any leaks before moving to the next step. The tube will be put in a chamber where the air will be removed. The next step is called the bombarding process. What happens is that when the air is being removed, a high current is inserted through the tube through wires covering the electrode.
Different color neon signs?
The reason for the different color on neon signs is because it depends on the gas in the tube. Neon is red, helium is orange, argon is lavender, krypton is gray or green, mercury vapor is light blue, and xenon is gray or blue. When mixing gases and elements added to a neon light creates different hues. Baking fluorescent powders onto the inside walls of the glass tubes also changes the colors and shades of the finished neon sign. Colored glass tubes are also used for the same effect.
How long do neon signs last?
Neon signs can last for decades. In practical terms the expected life span is between 8 to 15 years for a neon sign powered on 24 hours per day.
Can I customize the neon sign?
